Julius Molnar

He was a tail gunner on the Taloa, a B-24 on the same flight with the Lonesome Lady and also shot down. The Adjutant General’s office, in a letter to his mother dated May 15, 1946, wrote her “to inform you of the death of your son . . . who was previously reported missing in action 28 July 1945.” The initial report stated that his bomber was shot down over Kyushu. Later, on February 10, 1949, she was informed that “Department of Army records are, therefore, being corrected to show that Staff Sergeant Molnar was killed in action on 6 August 1945 at Hiroshima, Honshu, Japan . . .”

A mass funeral for eight men was held November 3, 1949, at Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri. The services consisted of burying one symbolic casket. Only the dates of death and names were listed on the tombstone. Five of these eight were from the Lonesome Lady: Atkinson, Ellison, Long, Looper, and Ryan. Their death date, along with that of Baumgartner from the Taloa and Porter, the pilot of the Hellcat from the USS Ticonderoga, was listed as August 6, 1945. The other name listed was that of Molnar, whose death date was listed as July 28, 1945. The July 28 date is of course in variance with the statement above which indicates that the death date was “corrected” to August 6, 1945. Whether Molnar survived until August 6 is in question.
